Hickman and Olsen reunited for 2020 Bennetts BSB with Smiths Racing BMW

Smiths Racing BMW have announced their 2020 Bennetts British Superbike Championship line-up as Peter Hickman remains with the team for a fourth consecutive season alongside Alex Olsen who returns for his first full campaign in the premier class.

Hickman proved the pace of the new BMW this season despite having to hit the ground running with no testing, but fought into a Showdown position and claimed the new model its first podium finish in the championship.

Olsen returns after joining the team for the final rounds of the season, battling into a best result of ninth place at Oulton Park. Now he is looking ahead to his first full campaign in 2020 after stepping up from the Pirelli National Superstock 1000 Championship.

Hickman said: “I am really happy to be staying with Smiths Racing for a four consecutive year. The team has grown massively over these last three seasons and we have grown together. This year we have done a lot of development with the new BMW S1000RR and I believe we have done a great job getting into the Showdown.

“Now we really need to work out what we need to do so that we can start winning races on a regular basis. This winter we can work on these things and it will be great to have the opportunity to test ready for next year and hit the ground running, unlike this year!

Olsen said: “I am really happy to be staying with Smiths Racing BMW next year. I feel like I have learnt a lot already since first joining the team and I think we can build on that going into next season.

“I would like to thank Alan and Rebecca from Smiths Racing BMW for giving me this opportunity and also all my personal sponsors for their continued support for making this happen.”

Team Manager Darren Jones added: “I am really happy to get our riders announced before the winter break. Alex has been a great addition to the team with a similar work ethos and calm attitude to Pete.

“The team is staying exactly the same so it’s nice to maintain some consistency and we look forward to having some time and development with the new BMW S100RR. I would just like to thank all our sponsors for the continued support and the hard-working staff who never stop giving their all - teamwork makes the dream work!”

Team Principal Rebecca Smith commented: “We are delighted to continue with Peter, Alex and BMW in 2020. We’ve had a another successful season and have shown the potential of the new S 1000 RR in its debut season by qualifying for the Showdown and we can only come back stronger next year. We are looking to build on our experience this year and we look forward to another strong campaign next year.”
